Program Description
Students will begin the day with an opening devotion and continue with the following classes:
Catechesis & Recitation – Following the Catechesis curriculum from Wittenberg Academy, this class will include a daily reading from the Bible and will focus on learning and reviewing hymns, psalms, Bible verses, and Catechism selections. Using music and repetition, students will also memorize facts related to other academic subject areas.
Grammar/Vocabulary – Using the Shurley English curriculum, this class will introduce and review grammar concepts and practice “jingles” as memory aids. Games and other exercises will be used to reinforce learning. Students will also expand their vocabulary and practice dictionary skills with each new lesson.
Spelling/Cursive – Students will learn and practice New American cursive through copy work selections. Students will also be required to learn weekly spelling words, corresponding with the phonics and spelling rules presented in their grade-level classical curriculum.
History/Geography – Using the Veritas Press history curriculum, students will pursue a chronological study of world history with a focus on the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Reformation. Students will use colorful and informative history cards to learn about 32 different events from this period of history, as they continually review a timeline memory song about the events. Additionally, students will read supplemental books, complete fun projects, and make use of a timeline and maps of the region.
At the Grammar Level, there is a great emphasis on memorizing names, dates, places, and events, which will help students gain a valuable tool for understanding how God is working today and what He has done during many past events.
Mathematics – This year we plan to use the Simply Good and Beautiful Math Program. Parents have the option of using this program or choosing their own curriculum. Each grade level will receive one in-class lesson per week and one free period per week, which the students will use to work individually in their math books. Students will need to take a math assessment over the summer in order to determine their grade level placement.
Latin – Using the Latin for Childrencurriculum, students will be trained in grammar, vocabulary, and English derivatives in a lively, interactive way that is perfectly suited to students in the grammar stage.
Literature – Students will be reading several books from the Memoria Press Third Grade Literature program, in addition to some poetry selections. Class time will involve reading aloud selections from the books, class discussions, and activities.
